GET HOOKED ON FISHING - SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

A Social Enterprise is a business with social objectives where surpluses are principally reinvested for the benefit of the business and their employees, or in the community they are located. They help to tackle a wide range of social and environmental issues and can deliver high quality, lower cost products and services. Most importantly they create real opportunities for the people working in them and the communities they serve.

In July 2006 the founding Durham scheme formed a social enterprise Get Hooked North East Ltd, a company limited by guarantee.

The Directors are all local to the area, have a keen interest in their local environment and the development of young people.

They are - Eph Bunting, Mick Watson & Philip Farley.

The new company acquired a 38 acre site at Witton Park near Bishop Auckland, with 3 fishing lakes, a purpose built training facility with café & tackle shop.

The first years accounting figures are due with an excellent likely out-turn of around 70% revenue 30% grant funded. The model is based on good local engagement and the achievement of commercial income from the fishery sitting alongside the charitable aims of the company.

Now a partner in the INSPIRE programme with North East Social Enterprise Partnership (NESEP). We will be looking to share best practice and to replicate the business model for the benefit of other local communities.
