Getting Inspired in Scotland

Getting Inspired in Scotland Great News as Get Hooked wins investment in Scotland
15:19 fundAll of the hard work that Sue Coulthard and her steering group have undertaken on a voluntary basis over the past 18 months paid off this week when their Annan based project was named as one of the chosen charities to attract funding.

The intention of the newly designed Inspiring Scotland 14:19 Fund, developed by Lloyds TSB foundation is to invest in charities chosen are targeted at improving the lives of 14 to 19 year olds. In their first round of investment they announced the funding of £55 million of cash to 24 charities over the next ten years.

The Scottish Government has invested more than £9 million over three years, and this is being used alongside support from other investors. Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning for the Scottish ParliamentFiona Hyslop said:

"In these difficult economic times, it's crucial that we equip our young people with the skills to reach their potential and contribute to a more successful Scotland. People are any nation's greatest asset and giving more choices and chances to our young people will help them play their part in building our economic future, leading to benefits for us all."

Get Hooked Scotland certainly hope that they can play a part in that and will receive over £650,000 in the next 7 years. The Trust has also registered as a Charity in Scotland, charity no SC040038

We've Hooked a great one in Wansbeck

Jamie - all at seaA Prime Move
Last year 17 year old Jamie Prime was recruited as a participant on our Sea Fishing scheme in Wansbeck. He quickly became a peer mentor and under the guidance of project coordinator Darren McGlen started to get more and more involved with the Wansbeck programme.

He joined the GHOF team at the 2007 Substance Conference and in front of the 150 strong audience talked about his experience with Get Hooked. Earlier this year he joined Darren on a trip to Norway.

Applying his passions of fishing and music to work undertaken with his local community Jamie was named Young Volunteer of the Year in the Wansbeck Region.

With support from the Environment Agency as soon as he was 18 we sponsored Jamie through his level 2 coaching course. He now joins the expanding Get Hooked team working as a part time coordinator with Darren to help deliver courses in Wansbeck. A prime move indeed as Jamie becomes the first of our young participants to be taken into paid employment.

Well done Jamie and welcome on board.

Getting Hooked in the BELP

BA cold day at the Tees Barrageillingham Environmental Link Project
Dave Munt is known to many in Teesside - involved in the angling community for years he joined Get Hooked when we achieved the National Sports Foundation funding.

Over the past two years he has worked closely with the Billingham Partnership and with them has been involved with them during the development of the Billingham Environment Link Project.

In January Dave will be working directly for the project as they seek to develop a social enterprise and a community build linked closely to other local conservation and health projects in the area. He will still be delivering Get Hooked schemes on a part time basis and we hope to add some of their new work to our other projects.

Good Luck Dave we know that you will be a great success

Get Hooked on What ?

Remembrance in FranceOur schemes around the UK show it's not just about fishing.
Taking a group of lads from Liverpool & Durham fishing in France in November gave Mick Watson and Peter Henery the opportunity broaden their programme to include some history.

Here they can be seen visiting one of the memorial sites from World War 1. Paying homage at 11 o'clock on the 11th day of the 11th month gave them an awsome reminder of how lucky they are to be there .

Obviously inspired Little Andy went onto break a lake record catching a 53lb 8oz common.

A team from the sea fishing scheme in Wansbeck had a stand at the first North East Sea Angling and Boat Show held at the Nissan Sports Club. As well as mingling with some of the top Sea Anglers in the country the lads were able to promote the new scheme in Easington - which is generating alot of local interest.

Entering the Dragons Den at the Voice 08 Conference in Liverpool would be a daunting experience for anyone . A group from Alsop High School working on our module 3 however presented their 'Build your own Fishery' project ...they toughed it out coming 3rd and won £1000 in the process. - Well done lads.

In Shropshire Karl Humphries is helping pupils from Thomas Adams school to convert their fishing experience by using technology to make a calendar for 2009. With the first print run due in December they are hoping to sell them to generate some cash towards their fishing trips next year.

Thanks to our Funders

So what if its snowing!Every contribution helps
The Trust has been successful in securing some funding from the Good Fund before it closes it's doors at the end of the year.

Using the money to buy outdoor clothing and equipment for some of the schemes means that we can provide warmer clothing for some of the young people who just turn up in t-shirts. We will be looking to sell branded clothing next year - watch the website for an update.

We have been awarded a grant of 2000 Euros to help develop our sea fishing schemes around the UK by EFFTA. EFTTA was established in London in 1981, as an international, independent association to serve the European fishing tackle trade by campaigning to promote sportfishing, environmental issues and international business.

A BIG THANK YOU TO BOTH FUNDERS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION
